Clive Clink receives his call up papers.
In the town of Strasburg Clive Clink receives his call up papers into the grenadier guards. His brother Carl had been a member of this regiment before his untimely death in the First Battle for Duseldorf. Some strings had been pulled by the colonel of the regiment to admit Clive as he would normally have gone into a line regiment.
Clive had served in the reserve and, prior to his accountant's job had been a game keeper so he was no stranger to firearms. He felt he had to do his duty, as his brother had, for the fatherland. Hermany was planning an invasion of Crussia to avenge its earlier incursion yet news had arrived that Crussian forces threatened the town of Duseldorf yet again.
TWO MONTHS LATER
After two months intensive training Clive is with the 4th Grenadier Guards marching towards Duseldorf.. He has impressed with his marksmanship, so much so that he has been selected for sniper duties.
Meanwhile two columns of lancers led by Von Fleet , accompanied by a light hose artillery piece are approaching Duseldorf..
The war weary civilians have returned to their town but are bracing themselves as farmers have reported Crussian scouts in the area.
Gypsies are entertaining Duseldorf civilians in an eerie omen of events several months previously. Events in Crussia are swiftly leading to a new threat to Duseldorf. The Crussians have not given up their designs on Eastern Hermany. The morale of the Crussian army is high as they approach the frontier singing patriotic songs. The Zsar has ordered the arrest of the mad monk, Neputsar and, as a result, Neputsar has fled to the far eastern wilderness. The Tsar has professed his faith in the Tsarina's loyalty and the reputation of the royal family has been restored.
The Crussian army moves faster than its customary slow pace. The black coated cossack regiment of Patrichek's Thieves Bandits is especially rapid in its advance. Its previous incursion had led to serious depletion in its numbers but Colonel Patrichek had escaped and showed extraordinary speed in recovering from his injuries. He wasted no time in recruiting new cutthroats for his unit. It was well known that his men had considerable liberty to pillage and do other unmentionable things. His men headed for the very same area where they had attacked a refugee column once before. The farm folk ran in terror and the cossacks ran them down. However, cossacks were totally oblivious to the rapidly approaching columns of enemy uhlans! The uhlans wiped out the cossacks and paused to ponder their dead countrymen.
Meanwhile a Crussian militia unit positioned itself on a hill opposite Duseldorf and a rifle regiment positioned itself at the base of the hill as two medium artillery pieces also moved forward. General Westernsky also arrived with his guard of the 15th Hussars and a machinegun team edged around the forest where it could have a clear view of Duseldorf.
Army Black's lancers now looked to exploit their initial success by attacking Army Dark Green in the centre, before it could get to Duseldorf. An initial attack on a machinegun team made Von Fleet's column recoil and seek an 'easier' target. His own 2nd Uhlan's prepared to attack the Crussian Rifle unit Meanwhile the 9th Uhlans, resplendent in their old fashioned blue uniform coats with white plastrons, raced in to the town of Duseldorf and rallied the citizens. The inhabitants moved barrels, crates, wagons and the fire truck to block off the town to the enemy. They were also alerted to the presence of a spy and everyone looked for suspects.
Von Ryan of the high command had arrived and directed the infantry columns to support the cavalry. His two light artillery pieces opened up, causing substantial damage to the enemy. Then the two cavalry columns at Duseldorf charged the Crussian Rifles. The Crussians opened up with rapid fire, devastating the uhlans, but the latter pressed home their charge, causing many Crussian deaths, making them withdraw.
The Crussian gun in the centre opened up on the town, blowing up the fire engine, which was blocking the street. Then, a series of misfortunes struck the Crussians. Graf von Hentzau's Ruritanian Lancers chose that moment to charge the gun, killing all the crew. If that was not enough, a Crussian shell hit a limber on the Cussian's left flank. It blew up, wipng out half of the black coated, elite Officers Regiment and part of the auxiliary lancers of Snookum Ookums. This crippled an attempt by Army Dark Green to launch a flank attack.
At that moment the inhabitants of Duseldorf discovered the spy, the Herman spy in the town playing his own part in the discovery. To avoid suspicion the spy was actually in the process of adding a sack to a barricade. Desperately the spy threw his infernal device, destroying a barrier and killing a citizen. Three pistol armed citizens fired at the spy but they all missed. Then a farmer opened up with his double barreled shotgun, killing the spy, and also a fireman caught in the burst.
The Herman guard and infantry regiments move in to position, bolstered by a machinegun to protect the town of Hamstein which is also under threat from Crussian auxiliary lancers. The Crussian advance there stalls as it is also gravely damaged by the previous Herman gunnery.
Snipers on both sides have taken positions in cover. Clive Clink shoots from a patch of trees and kills to Crussian infantrymen before returning to his regiment. A Crussian sniper, positioned in a tree, shoots down two uhlans.
At this point few Herman cavalry remain on the field and a Crussian regular infantry regiment is approaching through the forest. However, the Hermans have all their artillery and the Crussians have no crew to man the remaining cannon. Herman grenadiers and infantry are not far away. The Geronstein pioneers are now at Duseldorf to add to the defences but the lack of artillery is the deciding factor. (Ironically mortal enemies Geronstein and Ruritania have both offered their troops to Hermany in order to curry favour). Army Black pulls its remaining cannon back and withdraws to fight again, defending Mother Crussia from the invasion which will follow.
