ACW Battle Plans
Plans have begun for an outside ACW game. The game did not eventuate today due to threatening rain and players, Mat and Ryan assisting their father in cubby demolition! However, the battlefield is planned and the players have indicated to me where they want their reserves to come on, hopefully next weekend.
Above you can see the sunken road and three towns. One of these towns is not immediately accessible by either side, as it is on the other side of the river. The objective of the game is to acquire the most towns.
Each side will start with fifteen infantry regiments of 24 figures each and four cavalry of twelve figures each. Reserves of nine units a side are available. I have already rolled a D6 secretly to determine the arrival times. For each unit I have also rolled a D10 to determine the nature of each reserve unit. A unit can consist of one 12 pounder, two six pounders or one 18 pounder cannon or it may be infantry or cavalry. The reserves on each side have turned out to be very different. Neither player will be told what they are until they arrive. Mat and Ryan had the option of having them arrive on either side of the river. Above are some of the Confederate forces.
It appears that both generals intend to use most of their reserves on the initially uncontested objective.
Above are some of the Federal troops.
Unlike some earlier wargames the veranda will be counted as an impenetrable mountain range so the river will be a key focus for getting from one area of operations to another. As yet it is unknown if there are any areas of river that can be crossed by the cavalry.
Partisan forces may be operating on both sides behind the enemy lines. These are Quantrill's Raiders for the Confederacy and Jennison's Jayhawkers for the Federals.
The generals, as brothers, will fight against each other as only brothers can - without quarter!
Above; Confederate troops march. Below: Union forces prepare for battle.
Below: Federal Indians.
Artillery will be limited to six rounds of ammunition and must be resupplied by wagons.
Looks like it should turn out to be a great and memorable event.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ross, I am adding a few more regiments to the original reserves. Presently there wil be about 400 figures a side which is not the maximum I can field but I don't want too many figures on the ground in case I have to move them in a hurry. The weather is getting a little unpredictable.
ReplyDeleteA fantastic array - are there are any Zouaves in action??
ReplyDeleteAs ever
Paul
Yes! There will be at least one Federal zouave regiment in the reserves.
