Big Mek Gun 40K Orks
Here is my first of the new Ork Big Mek guns constructed as a Kustom Mega Cannon. Prior to this I used some stand in toy cannons first as Bubble Chukkas and then as Kustom Mega Cannons. The Bubble Chukkas were attractive because of their large blast but one dice is rolled for both strength and AP, which makes it very difficult to hurt vehicles or anything with decent armour, such as Space Marines. I think they would be good against ordinary Imperial Guard infantry, other orks and tyranids.
The Mega Cannons were another story and managed, in my game, to destroy some vehicles and infantry. I have decided they are the best with their small blasts but AP2 and strength eight. They do have the 'gets hot' rule though.
This week I am going to try out a Smasha Gun with no template but strength 6 + D6 up to four additional points of strength and AP1.
The Tractor Kannon with S8 and AP3 immobilizes aircraft on any glancing or penetrating hits and has the skyfire rule, great if the enemy brings fliers but liabilities if they don't as you then need sixes to hit non-aircraft.
The guns cost only thirty points each and you can have five in a battery. You can also have an ammo runt for each gun at only an extra three points each.
You can also keep the old kannons and lobbas at only 18 points each. A zap gun is five points extra.
I don't think there is much point taking extra crew other than ammo runts. The hits on a gun have a save of three on the two hull points rather than dividing between crew and gun. However they could be of advantage if put out front of the gun when receiving fire from non template weapons so you can take casualties on them instead of the gun as they are closest to the firer. The ammo runt, though gives you a re-roll of your gun's hits or scatters. Sure, it is one use but the chances are your guns will be shot up within a few moves anyway.
I decided on a cammo scheme based on some WW1 artillery where bright colours were randomly painted on them.
Below: Cheapo conversions using spare parts L to R Bubble gun, Tractor Cannon and Smasha gun
The model comes with spare parts for three other guns that I have attached to my cheapo cannons; you can find them in some bags of army men. The Bubble gun was made from an unidentified toy.
