Hex 103

King Long Shanks gathered his army and surveyed the field ahead. In the distance he could see a small Bogavanian village. Arrayed at the other side was the army of Joseph Kratowski in his purple colors and with the helm of a duck. Long Shanks could see a small unit of handgunners, less than a handful of crossbowmen, Hillmen mercenaries, a catapult and a unit of foot knights. Accompanying Kratowski was the hero, Darius Assanov in blue and whith with white and red stars and a golden helm. He could also just make out Alexander Baranov among the enemy foot knights.

Long Shanks proudly surveyed his army: His prize mounted and foot knights assembled, The Black Knight rode by his side. he also perused his many longbowmen, including heavy and light. Then there were his Sell Swords, a unit of Fritzian Great Swords with a tremendous reputation for strength and loyalty and then there were the wild Hilmen armed with two handed axes, swods and even immense hammers. Some of them wore strange head gear of reptilian scales or snookum ookum bird feathers. others had conical metal helmets. Most wore chain mail surcoats but virtually all had long flowing hair and beards and, primarily flaxen or red. The king's own army outnumbered the enemy two to one and it was becoming increasingly apparent that King Maxfield had left his Northern frontier poorly defended, perhaps with the intention to concentrate his forces in the South to retake the territory he lost with Castle Mathers. So far that had made the Northern campaign easy. He had driven Bogavanian archers and a tower building project from the Western coast by the Emerald Sea. Now he was about to prevent another tower building project.

Long Shanks knew that the Bogavanians had a reputation for accuracy with their catapults so he decided on a strong attack from his left flank, screened by trees. The two bands of mercenaries advanced here followed by himself and the mounted knights. In the center the archers and foot knights advanced.

The Bogavanian handgunners assembled in the centre and opened up on our archers only to find themselves out of range. The archers opened up on them and thinned their ranks. The three enemy crossbowmen manged to bring down some of our light archers.

Meanwhile the Bogavanian foot knights stealthily advanced on the Beersteiner right. Suddenly Darius Assanov, rode his charger forward into the Beersteiner heavy archers but they stood firm and felled him. Meanwhile the archers all shot at the advancing knights who were thinned but weathered the storm. They hammered some archer heads but then the Beersteiner hero, the Black Knight tore into their side and balanced the battle until the knights were driven off, pursued by the Beersteiner knights.

Meanwhile, on the Beersteiner left flank the two units of mercenaries attacked the enemy Hillmen. the Bogavanian mercenaries hit first, due to their use of cover but then the mighty swords and axes took their toll until the defenders were wiped out.

The Bogavanian catapult reduced the ranks of the Beersteiner light archers but the latter replied with arrows until the crew was wiped out. A last battle occured between a few bogavanian knights and the Black knight who downed Alexander Baronski but then was himself dragged unconscious from his horse.

A handful of hand gunners, Joseph Kratowski and the supply wagon fled East - right into a swamp. The wagon quickly became stuck and was recovered by the Beersteiners who recovered five credits. Kratowski and the gunners escaped but it is as yet unknown if they will survive the fetid swamp.

Meanwhile the Chaos light horse at the Bogavanian capital were mauled by the Bogavanian mounted knights but four un-wounded and two wounded escaped and are headed to join Long Shanks with reports of the enemy capital. They had served their purpose well, having previously hunted a courier of Maxfield to his death and now returned with vital intelligence.

In another good fortune for long Shanks rich merchants in the East of Beerstein have financed a new castle in the region.
