Medieval Mayhem at Palmersaurus Shed Australia Day 2016

What better way to spend Australia Day weekend but to battle it out with toy soldiers? That is what a group of us did in a very salubrious beach home locale.  I spent the weekend alternatively swimming at the beach and playing wargames.

Our second large battle involved large numbers of medieval figures with Steve bringing his lovely painted figures, including the new Expeditionary Force ones, Bob brought his DSG black surcoated crusaders and I brought my own two hundred assorted archers, knights and men-at-arms to tackle host Dave's own assorted figures.

In theory my force of combined Bogavanians and Beersteiners was aligned to King Bobbles and Steve allied to King Palmersaurus. Meanwhile two Viking leaders guarded a valuable lord in their castle. The pope had guaranteed to pay the immense ransom to his captors, with a large portion going to those who would free Lord Hiccup. The Viking leaders were slow to arrive on the scene. meanwhile i had lord Steve to worry about and attacked his archers with my mounted knights. My object was to do some damage early. The Viking castle was closest to me and whoever established the best martial powers would convince the Vikings to turn over the lord or even to assist them but there was nothing to say the Vikings would not attack my rear. Ouch! King Bobbles, meanwhile was somewhat hemmed in by forest and could engage only a small portion of the enormous Palmersaurus column,,,so he chose not to! Nor was it clear that Palmersaurus would be a reliable ally to King Steve.

Despite initial success Steve's light infantry were able to mob my knights as they pushed forward after initially defeating his troops. My impetuosity was severely punished! meanwhile one of my couriers met with Freya, the female mounted Viking leader (mounted on a horse that is). My king was offered eight very comely Viking princesses in return for eight of our best horses, Unfortunately our horses were occupied in conveying our knights. Further negotiation between Freya and King Long Shanks ensued . With some trepidation an alliance was entered into.

Meanwhile the treachery of King Bobbles became well manifest as King Palmersaurus moved his column past him completely without molestation! in fact Palmersaurus offered himself as hostage and was wined and ined by the devious Bobbles. Strangely, even when the column generously offered its rear there was no action by King Bobsley. In fact, treachery of treachery he joined in!

By this time My own forces were so depleted that a leadership test on the army was required and king Long Shanks and the remnants of his army retreated in the face of three enemy armies. The vikings were somewhat alarmed as they had left the castle to join the long Shanks army. Freya tried to negotiate but did not like the terms given by Bobble's knightly courier, turned on him and chopped him into pieces with her double headed axe!

In the meantime Bobbles crusaders had threatened and attacked the Vikings who were withdrawing to their castle. They turned and hewed into their tormentors. Lord Hiccup, meanwhile met a grizzly end as he was thrown over the castle wall to break his neck from the collar chain and to dangle as a symbol of defiance to the crusaders.

At this point the game ended as no objective remained and there were no winners.

                                                          My own medievals

Freya leaves the castle watched over by Odin.
                                                                  King Bobbly's men
                                          Archers await the Beersteiner/Bogavanian army.
Viking cavalry emerge from the castle,
King Palmersaurus archers occupy a ruin.
Beersteiner prisoners led to the rear by King Steve's men
Beersteiner forces depleted, the king temprarily participated in battle but could do insufficient damage before fleeing the field.
Vikings unable to reach safety of the castle turn to face King Bobbly's army.
                                                                 King Bobbly's men
                                                      Steve's Expeditionary Force figures
..... and assorted others including Supreme and converted friar Tucks. The latter's efforts to avert war were doomed.
                                                           More of Steve's army

Vikings vs crusaders of King Bobsy's army.
A Viking watches over his knightly, chained captive.
                                                          King Palmersaurus's army
....... and his Lord Cresent contingent.
                                                              One dead captive
Combined Bobsly and Palmersaurus column. They were supposed to be enemies.
                                                            Don't 'piss off'' Freya!

A second battle between myself and Dave was played that evening and the next day. Objectives were table sections and the holy ruins. I set up first and went first but my weak right flank intended to join up with the center eas caught and eventually slaughtered by mass archery shooting. I fared better on the left flank but the center came under pressure as the Palmersaurus forces attacked first and gained the initiative with infliction of melee casualties. The war was a clear victory for the Palmersaurus forces.
