The Battle Of Marchant River - Opening Moves

The game will go for 12 moves and then we will roll to see if it continues for up to four more moves.

The battle opened well for my Beersteiners, who had also arrived in the hex before the Bogavanians and so were slightly further into the hex, gaining first move and on move two rolling a number of sixes for the units to arrive from a army in the neighbouring hex. The Bogavanians were having trouble getting across the river but then disaster and treachery struck the Beersteiners as their  Hillmen changed sides and attacked the Beersteiners already in melee with the enemy. These particular Hillmen were so savage as they foamed at the mouth and therefore had two attacks each on impact. Maybe it was something someone said about Olsen's relationship with mountain goats that triggered the change of loyalty. Meanwhile, the Bogavanian halberdmen pushed back the Beersteiner foot knights and Bogavanian matchlockmen  -  as you will recall matchlocks were invented by Leonardo De Caprio - exchanged shots with Beersteiner mounted allied archers across the river, each inflicting a few casualties.

                                      BELOW:
Bogavanian medium knights cross the Marchant River.
Beersteiner Crusaders rush to intercept the enemy.
The allied Hillmen follow behind the crusaders, watched by a cautious antelope.

                                                               The first clash
Beersteiner forces arrive from an adjacent hex
.

Bogavanian halberd armed knights also cross the river.
                                             Beersteiner allied Hilmen move up.
Beersteiner plate armoured knights crash into the existing melee to hit the Bogavanian medium mounted knights, the survivors fleeing towards the river.
The Beersteiners look like they will have an early victory as the Bogavanians are boxed in.
Then, even as the brave Beersteiner knights attacked a second enemy unit treachery occurred as the Beersteiner allied Hillmen, slavering and yelling to their gods launched themselves at their supposed allies. They chopped with their two handed axes and swords, severing horses heads, cutting through plate armour and muscle. The full explanation for this betrayal is unknown, other than some traded insults with the knights, previous to battle and possibly some enemy agents working behind the scenes to create division. In any case the knights were killed to a man.
More Beersteiner reinforcements rushed to the scene.
Bogavanian allied horse archers shot, even as they rode past, at the enemy matchlock men on the other side of the river.
Bogavanian halberd knights, led by a hero with double headed axe, push the Beersteiner knights back.
Beersteiner light archers try to move away from the melee to get a clear shot at the cursed Hillman traitors.
Another unit of Beersteiner knights push back Bogavanian allied Hiilmen only to expose its flank to more Bogavanian knights coming over the bridge. They now have to fight to units at once.
Bogavanian medium mounted mop up the remainder of the traitor Hillmen.
The Beersteiner allied mounted bowmen charge into the last of the enemy halberd men until they whittle them down and succeed in killing the Bogavanian hero.
Bogavanian knights pour over the bridge.

Beersteiner crusaders and mounted mediums both ride to stem the enemy river crossing.

Meanwhile a duel occurs between beersteiner archers (foreground) and Bogavanians in the distance.
Beersteiner light archers join in the archery duel until the enemy archers are wiped out.  Beersteiner foot crusaders and allied Hillman spearmen ensure no more Bogavanians will cross the river.
Bogavanian forces, Hillmen and knights recoil from the onslaught.
Finally a rush by the Beersteiner crusaders pushes the enemy from the bridge and wipes out a unit of their knights.
Bogavanian medium troops dodge Beersteiner arrows.
More Bogavanian archers arrive, too late to influence the battle.
The unit of medium mounted knights wiped out a much diminished crusader unit but itself then became prey as the foot crusaders and heavy infantry caught up with them. one of them survived to be taken into captivity.

THE END OF THE BEGINNING

The game went for thirteen moves. (After 12 moves we rolled a four sided dice and it gave us one more move after which, presumably, darkness fell).

We decided the battle was yet another draw. Casualties were high - total  116 Beersteiner (including the twenty traitors killed by their own side) and 93 Bogavanian but the Beersteiners were in possession of most of the field. The Bogavanians held a corner of the field, enabling them, if they stay, to position more troops on their side of the river. This battle they were unable to field around four of their infantry units of knights, medium and plate and also their two catapults and cannon did not get on to the field.

Each side lost four units but more Beersteiners were on the field due to the constant push backs that prevented much of the Bogavanian force arriving on the battle.

Both sides received back half their casualties of those units which were not destroyed. These are the men with treatable wounds.

For the time being the Beersteiner Eastern castles are safe. Another map move will decide the future of these armies.
