Minotaurs To The Left of Them, Ogres To The Right Rode The Heavy Brigade - Gerolstein Versus Chaos - Again

Mat and I played our Gerolstein versus Chaos game again but switched sides with Mat being Chaos. he already has his own Chaos army in Warhammer 28mm scale size so he favored that army in 54mm scale.

There were some slight differences this time round; the sacrificial site was slightly further South and the site of a mountain was bow a crossable field. The Chaos Bloodletters also had a magic save of four plus rather than five or six.

No Chaos unit got drunk from the Gerolstein alcohol deposited on the field.

Mat won the roll off to see who set up first but I won the roll to see who had first move and just as well as Matt set up most of his units very close to mine.

My left flank soon became in danger of being overrun as his winged Bloodletters led the charge, followed by mutants. The Gerolstein rifles and Gatling blazed away but the Chaos forces got stuck in to close combat very quickly. The Bloodletters drove off an infantry regiment and the mutants eventually killed off a Gatling and gun crew.

My Guard regiment held on i the middle, sending many volleys of death towards the Chaos hordes. On my right flank my voltiguers caused havoc among the orcs and mutants with accurate rifle fire. Fire power was increased by the voltiguers on the open tops of two omnibuses firing over the regiment in front.

Meanwhile the Chaos Lord pushed Beatrice towards the shrine. Then something astonishing happended as the armored steam car backed up to the shrine's stairway and four very brave engineers jumped out and charged the Chaos Lord. astonished as he was by this the evil one let go of beatrice. The engineers paid with their lives but as Beatrice ran for her life the driver of the armored car yelled to her and dhe boarded the vehicle. The driver headed for Gerolstein!

Suddenly galloping hoof beats were heard The light cavalry and then the heavy cavalry supported by a voltiguer regiment arrived from the West and on the Chaos right flank. The light cavalry charged orcs and the heavy charged the Minotaurs. Despite the initial damage caused the cavalry were then in peril as centaurs joined the minotaurs in fighting the heavy cavalry and ogres turned from recently attacking an armored steam car and joined the orcs against the light cavalry. The Gerolstein cavalry were doomed.

The flanking infantry climbed a rocky outcrop and were soon sending lead into orcs and ogres but then they were attacked from the rear by the remaining minotaur and from the front by the last ogres.

On the center of the field the Bloodletters squeezed through a gap next to the village huts and attacked one of the omnibuses. They destroyed it and a number of voltiguers were killed but the rest abandoned the vehicle. They then witnessed the maddened Chaos Lord singlehandedly driving off the Guard regiment after attacking it in the flank. But here the fortunes of battle changed for gerolstein because the regiment which left the omnibus formed up into two ranks and opened fire on the Dark Lord and killed him.

Disheartened, Chaos units, including Bloodletters turned and ran! The Gerolsteiners began a vengeful pursuit and exterminated the remains of an orc unit hiding behind  village. But the Gerolsteiners were still mindful lof ambush and limited how far hey would go.

Chaos lost nine units, including the Chaos Lord. Gerolstein lost seven units but had rescued the duchess's daughter.

The Gerolsteiner view on their left flank: the Chaos mutants and Bloodletters are uncomfortably close.

The grenadier guard shoot down a charging troll.
The Ugly Mugly giant meets the same fate on the other flank at the hands of the voltiguers.
Orcs charge in  on the Eastern front but ar repelled.
Mutants, after overrunning the cannon crew, pose a threat to the guards but the guards turn and, with a Gattling gun in support, finish off the mutants.

Ogres fail to dint the armored car but the driver backs up to the shrine. The engineers disembark and charge the Chaos Lord!
The light cavalry charge the 'Big 'Uns', the large orcs. They drive the orcs back before being checked.
The heavy cavalry charge the minotaurs.
The newly arrived voltiguers seek the high ground.
The Chaos Lord pushes Beatrice to her sacrificial place.
An ogre snarls at the withdrawing armored car.
The mutants at one of the now crewless Gatlings.
                                                       The general and the Duchess
Voltiguers open fire form their mobile platform, the omnibus.
The brave engineers ensure Beatrice's escape.
The light cavalry now contend with a two headed ogre as well as orcs.
A light cavalry regiment finishes off the last of some mutants.
                                                       Chaos catapult and beastmen.
A voltiguer regiment is attacked from two sides but defeats the attackers.

                                                            Death of the Dark Lord.

After their victory the voltiguers turn and fire on the centaurs.
The Gerolsteiners consolidate and move up the road. Chaos forces retreat but Bloodletters lurk in the forest. The Duchess decides her army has achieved enough  and no furher advance is made.

The surviving sorceress runs for it.
The biggest beastman declares himself the new leader.
The beastmen cheer but are in no mood to attack the Gerolsteiners.
Goblin archers took no part in the battle.
The only damage the catapults did was to lob a rock onto some Bloodletters!

  1. What a fantastic post!! I love everything about it - the fact of having a 19th century style army vs. a Chaotic Host, the incredible and inspiring mix of figures, the great scenery, the on-going story - just fantastic! Thanks for sharing this!

  2. I aim to please! Well sort of as this mix doesn't appeal to everyone. But it pleases me! I'm glad my sense of creativity appeals to you. This was one of the most enjoyable games I have played. The previous game, where I commanded Chaos rather than Gerolstein is one I am still writing up as a short story and I'll add more to it over the next few days.I prefer the ending of this game, though, where Beatrice is rescued. It really was a close run thing as no large Gerolstein units were in the immediate vicinity of the shrine as the sacrifice seemed imminent and troops couldn't fire on the Dark lord for fear of killing the girl.

On the other hand i was pleased with the balance between the two sides; the Gerolsteiners had it their way so long as they could keep their distance but had very tough time when attacked, in close combat by very strong creatures. it isn't always possible to maintain a long range killing zone, especially when a rescue mission is involved.

I could also increase the power of both sides with steam or diesel tanks on the humans side and more powerful magic and demon lords on the other. As it happened I used level 1 wizards and they didn't have access to magic missiles or comets which is what could really have helped turn the battle for Chaos. However, Chaos won the first game with this same low level of magic which just targeted leadership of the Gerolsteiners.
