Conclusion to Glorietta Pass
Just as he Confederate Texans were knocking the stuffing out of the Federals cavalry charge Colonel Chivington arrived at the ranch. The few Texans there were mostly soon shot down before the could get off a shot. Some bravely ran to the wagons to try to get them to the main force; it was too late.
However, the 6 ounder crew got off a couple of shots before their cannon blew up. Meanwhile Commander Scurry's scout reported back and another six pounder and some dismounted Texans rushed back to the ranch Some more shots found their mark among the Coloradans.
The new Mexican militia had arrived too. They were mostly clothed in peon white but with Dark blue kepis. But Colonel Chivington was not interested in following orders to attack the Confederate main force. His men had burnt the wagons and bayoneted their horse teams. His force withdrew back over the cliffs.
THOUGHTS
The destroying of the wagons was too easy. I should have made it take a little longer but I had expected, by law of averages, for Chivington to arrive later. never bet on dice! Having learnt that these out-flankers had to scale down cliffs I might also make it possible for the few Texans there to respond faster if they see them doing so. But then, in the historical case Colonel Chivington did achieve federal victory by destroying the Reb supplies.
I could have allowed the Confederates to station more troops at the ranch but I wanted to follow the historical example where they didn't have a damned clue as to what was going to happen. As far as they were concerned there was no way for the yankees to approach from that direction.
Mat and I are going to replay the game in a week and this time I'm to be the Yankees. Knowing my luck, this time Chivington will get lost and never arrive!
