DETAILS OF THE GAME
Each side consisted of a unit of mounted knights a unit of foot knights, three matchlock units and two pike units as well as two cannons with crew. Mounted: 12 figures Foot: 24
Mat and I began at 11 am, had an hour break and finished at 2:30 pm. The game had 11 moves and resulted in a victory for my Beersteiners. However, I had only my general and staff, two units of knights and two cannons with crew left at the end of the game as all my commoners were dead! The Bogavanian general and guard survived.
Although the matchlocks were not accurate weapons I expect them to have had better results against massed troops. They did not kill huge numbers of the knights charging directly at them so I am going to marginally increase their to hit/wound score, especially at short and medium range.
I put my two pike units in column which worked well as I had a rule where four ranks of pikemen could fight in melee (it had been three for spear men in our previous battles). I forgot to add rank bonuses for melee resolution, which would have further strengthened their results. As it was they had some temporary success against the foot knights but in the end were pulverised.
We also forgot to add separate combat for unit officers.
The rules were the same we used for our previous Bogavanian command. These have some influence from Warhammer except I use 12 sided dice that combine results for hitting, wounding and armour save - one die role for figure instead of three. We are just playing individual battles rather than a campaign for now, We are going to play another game of a similar nature in a week or two.
FUTURE GAMES
Other games scheduled will be Bogavanians and Beersteiners united against orcs with some monstrous creatures included. Renaisance Fezia against Beerstein is another game we will play.. Fezia will not have pike but will have horse archers and possibly a war elephant! As mentioned another time, Fezia is a combination of medieval Turkey, ancient Persia and various Middle Eastern and Eastern lands. It also has an Aztec colony! Also planned is Funny Little Wars era, Ameriga versus Redia.
