Fezian Expeditionary Force Faces Possible Extinction
Having just played one interesting game Mat and I decided to calculate forces for our next game. it seems the gods are with Patra! The Patran force is more than half the size of the Fezian one and pretty tough.
Neither of us has siege weapons or elephants. There are no wizards or monstrous beasts. However Patra has a secret weapon - a flame thrower. I have decided that it can be secreted in any unit of foot Greeks. On the unit receiving casualties a dice roll s required to see if the flamer is killed, which will have dire consequences for the host unit, probably D6 casualties. Any unit targeted by the flamer will be damaged by the template which allows no cover. Target units must also do a leadership test.
Almost the entire Patran force is made up of heavy infantry, including 6 units of Romans and 6 of Greeks. There are also two units of lights, a unit of Hillmen/Vikings with spears and a unit of bowmen. There is one unit of Greek cavalry and one of Roman cavalry (Supreme and DSG).
The Fezians have one plate armoured cavalry with lances and four units of light mounted archers (Saracens and Mongols). They also have two or three light infantry units and a matchlock man unit.
I can see this is going to be a challenge. Mat and I previously agreed that if a side is seriously outnumbered then some circumstances will be put in place to favour it. So, although we will use the same battlefield, I have removed some trees to give better field of fire. (This is a double edged sword as the trees would also have slowed the enemy advance). With Mat's agreement mounted archers will be increased to 14 man units. The Fezians will occupy the temple area and the Patrans will come on from the other end of the table with units two deep or one if in column along the other table edge. Remainders come on from reserve.
This time when a leadership roll is failed any other units within 10 cm must also roll for leadership. if they fail the next and so on. This gives a small force a chance if it does well but of course it can also operate against the small force. Patran units that fail morale due to casualties falling below 50% will be removed but Fezians will retreat until rallied or they go over the board edge. Obviously presence of a general within 30cm will help here to rally. This ads to the possibility of surviving long enough.
The Fezians have to survive for 12 moves. There will be n dice roll to see if the game continues. If any Fezians are left on the field uncaptured or killed they have 'won'. This is one way of allowing an outnumbered side to win and could be used for other last stand scenarios like the Alamo or Thermopylae. The Patrans have to exterminate them or drive them off the field. Presumably the Fezians are buying time for their next army to invade.
