Conquistadors Versus Aztecs Part 2

Musket men repel an Aztec attack and push them back.

Cortes and his men, using war dogs, cut through the Aztecs and push up the steps of Montezuma's temple.
Musket men pour led into the Aztecs before defeating them in close combat.
Spanish musket men and crossbowmen destroy the Aztec flank attack.
The Aztecs, with their surprise flank attack, managed to kill the crew of a cannon before a group of Spanish musket men and crossbow men  climbed a hill and charged the bowmen in the flank, pushing them back and destroying them.

PROGRESS OF THE GAME

The scenario was the same as our previous Toltec versus Viking games. The difference was the Spanish force was smaller, had cavalry, muskets, crossbows and a small calibre cannon.

Instead of relying on bluff and trickery I decided to go for an early and blunt tactic of immediate offence. The Aztec king and his temple were ignored. The First unit of cavalry charged followed by the second. They caused many Aztec deaths before being wiped out.

The infantry forces were distracted by a flank attack of two units of Aztecs. This forced Spanish forces to turn and confront them. This left a single unit of elite sword and buckler men under Cotes to charge the Aztecs to his front. As they were pushed back with the aid of war dogs and the ferocious leadership of Cortes they retreated up the temple.

The game ended at our customary 12 moves after a dice roll decided the game would not continue.

The cannon could fire every second turn and managed to kill a small number of Aztecs but was then de-crewed by Aztec archery. Two cavalry units were lost. Aztec casualties were, as to be expected, more than twice as large but should have been greater.

NEXT GAME

The next game will be the same scenario but I'll be the Aztecs.
