Preparing For The Campaign Game
I had head of using matchboxes to hold slips of paper with armies and orders for secret movement. I took a more expensive option of screw drawers. Each one is numbered to correspond to a hex number. If we had an umpire we could just show him where our armies are on the map and he could declare when armies had met.
Each paper indicates army composition, commander, heroes and wizards (if present), supplies and orders. Scouts can be used to find enemy forces but, in that case, they have to return with a report otherwise the paper remains unread and all the other side knows is that something is there (which presumably killed the scouts!)
In the case of a local commander wishing to ignore or change orders a die needs to be rolled to see if he can do it. Otherwise orders are changed when a message to do so arrives from the capital or king.
So far we have written down where our armies are (must begin at a settlement or the capital) and Mat and I must now write down our orders. We determined that there were two years of peace before war breaks out between Bogavania/Fezia and Beerstein. We have the option of deciding, in that period, to send heroes on quests into some of the more supernatural lands, to find treasure and magic weapons but that does risk starting wars with orcs, undead etc.
