Wizardry And Magic In Hex 108 (First battle)
The recent battle on the central Beerstein/Fezia border saw some heavy use of magic. As mentioned previously, Mat and I employed the Warhammer system and made use of the Warhammer rule book from 2009. Games Workshop alters its rules and codexes every three years - n fact the fantasy game is now called Age of Sigmar and is a different rule set. or so but mat and I don't worry too much about that. First off, we are generally not even using Warhammer figures, let alone the same scale. If I see a rule or detail from any Warhammer edition, or anything else I like, I consider adding it into the mix.
The Warhammer magic rules, at first sight, look cumbersome but once you get used to them they are easy to use. All spell distances in the rules were doubled.
Each of our armies has a set number of magicians. By dice rolling we made a variable set of characteristics for each one. As with other characters we not only established magic level but used a percentage dice to work out loyalty, bravery, religion, goodness or evil etc. These latter might not play a huge role unless we come upon special situations such as a wizard being captured and persuaded to work for the other side.
The Warhammer book has various lores a wizard can specialise in. My sorceress, Sylvia 'The Snake' used the lore of fire and Mat's wizard, Umonara, used the lore of Heaven.
Ummonara sounds very scary as he was a level 4 wizard; this meant when he attempted to cast a spell he got to add his level to the number from the spell cast. His first spell summoned the Comet of Casandora. A fixed point was chosen and a D6 rolled each magic phase to see if the comet arrived. and affected all figures within 4D6. This caused me to avoid that area and so made a hole in my defensive preparations. In any case the comet was a fizzer and caused no damage.
Although Umonara caused some damage with other spells the most damage was done to his own side when he suffered 'perils of the Warp' on the roll of a double 6, blowing himself and a good portion of the unit he was with with strength 10 hits. Umonara still, according to our house rule has a chance of coming back in a future battle ir he can roll a 5-6 on a D6. This is a Magic Defence.
Sylvia had more luck with magic missiles and a spell which caused attackers to suffer casualties themselves when they melee with the unit she was with.
