State Of The Campaign: Random Events and Siege Of The Bogavanian Capital

I mislaid my list of 100 random events so today made a new list. Every four map moves we roll on the events list. I made sure that the more calamitous events had an equal chance of happing to both sides in the campaign. When I have typed them out I'll provide the list. Anyhow, Mat rolled number 13. This was not good for him! It is one of the raids by third parties, in this case Patra on his Eastern Fezia frontier. I am going to guess there are not a lot of troops handy to deal with the Patrans. The numbers and composition of the incursions are random. Mat can choose to send a force to counter this or leave it, in which case the incursions may increase. Mat was also in the process of sending a small force to retrieve POWs and characters captured in the earlier war with Patra. it remains to be seen if this still happens.

Not is all bad news for Mat. I just now recalculated my forces besieging the Bogavanian capital and he outnumbers me by about 100 troops! I have much more artillery (five guns and two siege guns) and two sorcerers. The artillery comes from reserve whilst Mat's two cannons are already set up.

    The Battle's First 8 Moves:

The Beersteiner army arrived from the North. It faced overwhelming numbers of Bogavanians. The largest Bogavanian force was at the Western end of the capital. A smaller force was to the East of the castle but was delayed by being restricted in crossing the river, to a crossing point.

Below can be see the mass of Bogavanians at the West end of the castle. It is heavy in heavy infantry units but fortified by pike and Hillman mercenaries armed with spears.

below: Bogavanian foces by the Western wall.
The Bogavanian view from the North castle wall.
Tobias, as overall commander ordered a strong advance on the Bogavanian right flank. Better, he thought, to get the first strike in, Prince Leon led his small cavalry force in the charge but his, only to be met with a wall of Hillman spears. The horses baulked and, instead, the Hillmen charged his knights. However, other cavalry was more successful and the Bogavanian heavy infantry was pushed back.
Then the Beersteiner halberd armed plate knights and the pike ploughed into the Bogavanians. The foot knights, especially, chopped up the enemy pike's weapons like so many matchsticks and pushed the pike back.
A Bogavanian crossbowman turns towards the sound of battle outside the castle walls.
Beersteiners exchange fire with Bogavanian archers on the North wall, nearly wiping them out.

A lot of melees on the Western flank happened very quickly. Beersteiner forces are in the foreground.
Beersteiner kinghts, with the sacred whale flag, plough into the Bogavanian pike.
Bogavania's Hill Men had success against the Beersteiner pike until a second unit of pike came into their flank.
On the Eastern flank Prince Vucic leads the first crossing of the river.
Initial success of Hillmen mercenaries in Bogavanian service, and chainmail cavalry is checked when the Beersteiner wizard turns into a mountain dragon which flamed them. Yet, then they heroically charged it. They even reduced some of its points so that it finished the melee with only five of its 8 moves left But the Beersteiner pike joined the melee and helped the dragon finish off the enemy.

By move eight the Beersteiner artillery, seven pieces, has arrived and starts to make a difference. To be continued...
