Next Wargames, ACW And Alien Abduction Multi period Wargame

Next week Mat and I will be playing another ACW game but an idea for the game after that occurred to me recently as it will be a while before I organize the next fantasy wargame. And no, the idea did not arise from consuming any illicit substances! You will know what I mean when you read the scenario.

So, I have some very nice small groups of ElastoWit figures that cover a wide range of periods and themes. Oh, for an excuse to use them all at once! So here comes the ever-popular alien kidnap scenario. Some extremely advanced aliens have kidnapped various human groups from different times and parallel universes and placed them on a planet to play a 'wargame'. The goal is to capture the moveable objectives and retain them until the end of a given time (most likely 12 moves).

Two ways the player's forces can be determined are blind selection of unit cards or to take turns in choosing known units. I am leaning towards the former to make the final army nature a surprise or a shock. Not all the figures will be ElastoWit but many will be.

Here are the units: 24 skeleton warriors, 24 Roman legionnaires, 4 'Scarecrows', sneaky fellows in scarecrow outfits and with flintlock pistols, who get hidden deployment in any cover on the board, 6 Expert 18th century swordsmen, 4 Kelly gang members, 8 Great White Hunters, 8 FFL including heavy machinegun, two lots of 6 Aliens with laser weapons, 4 Space heroes, that might be on separate cards or in a group, 8 Western Gunfighters, 4 Fanatical, post apocalyptical 'Mask Heads, 7 Morlocks, 7 armed Apes.

I am going to use Warhammer stat tables with Ballistic Skill, Weapon Skill, Strength, Toughness, Wounds, Initiative, leadership and armor. I am finding it fun to attribute these various factors to the different groups. Obviously, some units will be powerful in close combat but prone to being mown down! The gunfighters will have a special rule that if someone targets them, they get the chance of an extra shot first, in the OTHER SIDE's Turn! The Great White Hunters get a shooting bonus if they are stationary. The Space heroes get pretty good Initiative, Leadership, BS and WS. The Kelly gang get excellent saves until enemy shooters realize they can shoot their arms and legs! Skeleton warriors don't have to test to go into combat and never have to retreat.

Miss Liberty might well be one of the expert swordsmen/swordswomen.
Space heroes can include Flash Gordon, Dale, Buck Rogers etc.
                                                             The crazy 'Masked Fanatics'.
                                                               The Fierce FFL
                                                        The Brutish Gorilla soldiers
                                                                  Fiendish Morlocks
                                                       Solid column of skeleton warriors
                                                               Rampaging Romans

I decided NOT to include Daleks or Cybermen as they would (if accurate) be impervious to skeleton warriors and Romans and pretty safe from bullets too.

Back to the premise; After abducting these various groups they have been bribed or cajoled into fighting in a little war. It is unclear if the aliens just do this for fun or they use the humans to settle a conflict between themselves. The aliens who take part in the battle might be the abductors themselves or just other groups abducted by the uber-aliens.

The Romans and skeleton warriors have to fight in close formation (battle order or column). Everyone else can adopt an open order. it is unclear if the skeleton warriors have been kidnapped or if they are creations of the aliens.

The aliens will be humanoid, just like the space heroes. Their laser guns will be fairly impressive, but the bearers will have, for armor, just the equivalent of flak jackets that will give a low save to everything.

Small groups will be very vulnerable to being wiped out. The two very large groups will be prone to being shot to bits before they can get into combat but if they get into melee they will be reasonably effective.

The terrain will be randomly generated with a lot of cover partly neutralizing fire power. However, lasers can set fire to soft cover!

For terrain just about anything goes so I'll have fun with that as it will be an alien planet.

  1. I plan to do something similar using Thor Sheil's OMOG and OMOK rules in the same game for troops of different quality, weapons and periods.

Perhaps this is only a form of gladiator match for your aliens?
