Painted: Old Flat, Semi round and Rounf Old Metal Animals & People.
At the last ACOTS Convention swap-meet I obtained some more old leads. Some were given to me for free - thanks Damo. Most of the following are those recent acquisitions after I have repainted them. Many of them came very little paint left.
The flat 65mm Prussian was painted as a rifle unit member. A lot of these figures were made as home castings.
These two WW2 figures appear to be solid home castings. The rifleman is 'charmingly' crude in how he holds the rifle. I painted the two as Home Guard and gave one of them a civilian hat, easy to do with the crude shape of the helmet. (Special characteristics of the British Home Guard were the black gaiters, square ammunition pouches and HG arm band on the right arm.
The Indian I have had for some time and just finished it off today. I have some others of these Hilco also repainted. It had no feet, base, rifle barrel or feather and I made these from wire and putty and a base from a steel washer.
The two solid metal Boers appear to be home casts. They look a little skinny and the finish is slightly rough. They were painted but I added some finishing details. I'll add them to my AIP units.
The Britains dog I slightly repainted and carefully bent the legs so it would stand up well. The cow had lost one quarter of her paint so I have done a fair bit of repainting. I also carefully bent the legs so it would stand better. The whites on these old toys tend to have an aged slightly yellow finish so I let down my whites with some beige paint, probably not enough here. My repaints follow the original style and colors but with a little more detail, such as on the eyes.
The sheep did not need repainting.
The cowboy I already had from an earlier swap-meet. He and the two Indians were repainted as little paint was still on them.
The flat African had an axe in one hand but it was delicate and broke so I trimmed it completely away. That left him as a left handed spearman. I painted him in a simple, sterotypical style.
The flat metal girl I imagine as a German peasant gathering flowers. The Isa Brown chickens are very big compared to her, again repainted.
The flat lion and deer are nicely animated. There was a tiny bit of paint left on them and I based the colors on them.
The metal tree has not been repainted.
I used mostly gloss and semi-mat enamel paints on the figures but with some smaller details done with acrylics. The flat figures look good in shadow boxes. Most likely only the two WW2 figures might ever find their way into one of my wargames.
I really like your conversions and paint job! Gloss goes very well to these old-fashioned figures! Such figures are suited for old school rules like Shambattle, Little Wars or OMOG...
ReplyDeleteWell done!
Yes, I could see how they could be. As for the flats that is something I have only recently begun collecting but don't intend them to be a large part of my collection.
ReplyDeleteGreat buys, the semi flats will give you a different but really enjoyable gaming experience. Try One Man One Gun rules.

I don't have enough of these for wargaming. I have painted about one thousand round AIP, including Prussians so they are the wargame troops. These flats, will presently go in my shadow shelves or as background figures.
