Australian Flat Plastic Cowboys & Indians from My Childhood.

These flat plastic cowboys and Indians from my childhood were probably the first 'toy soldiers' I ever had, probably around the age two (1961).

To see just how young I was some of the figures had their extremities bitten off! The two gun red figure last on the top row was a victim and lost the end of one of his pistols.

This, very unfortunate Indian, below, lost the ends of his arms! On the upside the cowboy at right got one of my earliest paintjobs. I don't remember how old I was when I painted it, but way past the biting off bits of figures, maybe between nine and eleven. The cream paint was, I think, house paint. The chocolate paint was probably gloss Humbrol or Airfix.
There is a rifle firing cowboy which I have misplaced or lost.

My dim memory made me think they came in the cereal, but someone once told me this was not the case. They were possibly made by Toltoys. I used to have a large number of these figures, including yellow, orange and brown ones and they played a big role in my western wargames. They were easy to mow down with marbles from the side but hard if from front on if they were spread out.

Any further information on them would be welcome. There are also other flat figures from other ranges/makers.

  1. Your first paint-job was better than mine first...
How nostalgic. -I guess you're just going to keep them as is?!

  2. Yes, but I might try to cast copies in resin or metal.
