They did it! They finally did it!
"Damn them all to Hell!" I took these photos at Cowes beach, whilst on a camping holiday on Philip Island (known for its fairy penguins) yesterday after buying this plastic Statue of Liberty at an op shop. Unfortunately it is much smaller than 1/32 scale but I could not resist photographing it on the beach.
The quotes, of course come from the 1968 movie, Planet of the Apes and come from Taylor, played by Charleton Heston, one of my favourite actors. It was at the point where he escapes the apes with the gorgeous primitive girl called Nova and rides towards the 'forbidden zone'. It is there he sees the Statue of Liberty, mostly buried in the sand and realizes he is on Earth and not on another planet. (Strangely, the fact that the apes speak English does not seem to have clued him in). He realizes that a nuclear war has destroyed human civilization.
The film was based on the French novel, Monkey Planet. Four sequels and a TV series followed. Two more recent film took the story line in different directions. There have been various comic series including some recent ones. There is also a recent illustrated book called 'Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes' by Andrew E C Gaska, which fills in the gaps of what happened to the various characters.
