Beerstein in the Fifteenth Century

Beerstein shares borders with Bogavania, the Herman princedoms, Necrolia and the Fezian Sultanate's Slavonian provinces. As staunch defenders of the True Faith the crusader orders have great importance. The land is largely surrounded by mountains.

RESOURCES
Gold and tin are to be found in significant quantities in the Northern mountains. Extraction of minerals is sometimes hindered by the Pagan Hill People who live in the North and Western mountainous regions. Forested areas still abound although large areas were cleared in the South.

ETHNIC COMPOSITION
Hundreds of years of Germanic settlement has created a Germanic nobility ruling over the Slavic majority who mostly make up the peasant population. The rulers have kept a strong martial tradition. The Hill People are Scandinavian in origin and have maintained their Viking ancestors fighting traditions.

POLITICS
Beerstein is a feudal society where a new king is chosen from the previous king's family candidates by the High Council. Although strong consideration is given to the deceased king's eldest son other considerations have frequently been given priority. Membership of the High Council is made up of members of the high nobility and representatives of the warrior monastic orders. The High Council continues to serve an advisory role to the new king and has the power of veto on any decision considered to contradict adherence to The Faith.
Beerstein's Pagan problem and shared border with the infidel Fezians have kept the nobility very busy with defence. Recently, however they have become obsessed with what they regard as heresy in Bogavania. King Longshanks has a special loathing for Bogavania's ruler King Blue Iron.

The Pagan Hill people, are nominally under the rule of the Beerstein monarchy but in practice they have ruled their own affairs for centuries. They have suffered occasional crusades from the Beerstein rulers but have also been tolerated as a buffer to dark forces from Necrolia. Even though their pagan religion is despised by the Beerstein nobles the horrors of Necrolia have facilitated common cause. The Hill People have a representative parliament called the Whatsit. All non-slave men who own land and are over thirty may elect representatives who in turn elect a leader.

RELIGION
Gnostrotharustrianism is the state religion and the rulers of Beerstein tolerate no deviation from the Roman religious rulings of the pope. The Bogavanians are little different except for their new interpretation of Passover and the control of the church by the king. Beerstein has taken this as cause for a new crusade.
The Hill People have human-like, numerous gods that represent forces of nature. They no longer practise human sacrifice.
