Medieval Bogavania
FIFTEENTH CENTURY BOGAVANIA
The country of Bogavania is situated in Eastern Europe. It shares borders with Beerstein, Fritzerland and Hermany and Necrolia. The geography includes many bogs and marshes although twenty percent of these have been drained to make more land available for farming. Mining of iron ore and diamonds occurs in the mountain region of Drobeck. The River Travail is a major trade facilitator within the country as roads are often unreliable and thick forest and wetlands limit travel in some regions.
ETHNICITY
The major ethnic group is made up of the Bogas. It is generally accepted that the country has been named after this ethnicity rather than the prevalence of bogs. The Bogas have the highest known incidence of red hair in the world. The origin of the Bogas is mysterious but it is generally thought they came from the ancient central Asian kingdom of Bogtria. Pressure first from the Cimmerians under Conan the Destroyer and then from Mongoloid nomads eventually led to the destruction of Boctria and the migration South-West of its people to the land that would become known as Bogavania. Many privations were to be endured in this ancient era as raids from the dark forces of Necrolia carried off many to an uncertain fate. Fortunately for the Bogas, the eventual area of settlement had some natural protection from the long stretches of nearly impenetrable swamp.
RELIGION
Earliest known religious practices involved a fertility religion with worship of a mother goddess. This may have contributed to early Matriarchal traits in the society. Conquest by the Roman empire introduced other god and goddesses of a more patriarchal society. The conversion of the Roman empire to the monotheistic Gnostotharustrian faith led to the wholesale conversion of the Bogavanians and other nations such as the Beersteinians. In recent times the king has established a break away Church of Bogavania with himself as head instead of the Roman pope. This has led to increased friction with Beerstein which has been backed by the pope.
POLITICS
Bogavania is a feudal society with a king chosen by the principal of primogeniture. The country has been proudly independent for a thousand years. A strong warrior caste has ensured the nations security. The peasants have been restless in recent times, although they have been ruthlessly suppressed in the past. The occurrence of the Green Plague has reduced the availability of labour leading to improved conditions for those who have survived as the nobles have attempted to bribe peasants to stay on the land. A growing merchant class has also become more influential as the king has sought to balance the power of the feudal lords and to finance a national army.
KING BLUE IRON
King Blue Iron or Hinter Maxland - Maxland the Fourth - traces his ancestry back to the semi-mythical Zinder Maxland who was a warrior who, one thousand years ago is said to have destroyed the dreaded giant swamp serpents that had terrified the inhabitants of Bogavania.
Maxland the Fourth has successfully defended the country from incursions by the pagan Hill People and the crusader orders of Beerstein. He is currently increasing the size of the nations armed forces. His confiscation of the monasteries and their wealth has increased his reserves greatly.
