Battle of Pallin - First and Second Phases

The dynamite gun
Phase 1 The Cerisian forces of general Sushimato deploy rapidly and gain the initiative
Cerisian regulars heads for West Pallin.
                                              General Sudhiamo with the regulars.
Civilians hazard a peek in West Pallin.
Cerisian cavalry take cover behind the log wall, supported by some guards.
Matt moves his Cerisians to try to take East Pallin.

The Amerigan troops are plagued by delays and arrive piece meal with the dismounted Rough Riders and a machine gun with crew to defend against four Cerisian regiments. The dynamite gun and some more troops arrive but the dynamite gun explodes on its first attempt to direct fire. Amerigan hopes slump. Although the Amerigan troops firing and machine gun have some success the machine gun crew is then killed by accurate fire from Cerisian guard units.

Fortunately Cerisian artillery fire overshoots the Amerigans, fortunately as they are crowded into one segment of the battlefiled as they attempt to avoid being fired on by the whole Cerisian army
PHASE 2
Amerigan forces have all arrived, including general Hogwash, who had been suffering from gout.
Then a disaster hits the Cerisian army as a medium artillery shot from its own side falls among its infantry that have moved into the East Pallin walls. A dimished unit of Cerisian dismounted cavalry charge towards the Amerigans only to be cut down by the Rough riders.

Below: the late arrival of the regulars.
Colonel Marcher swings his volunteers around the East Pallin town to shoot down the enemy machine gun crew and to then put some well aimed volleys into the Cerisian infanty behind the log wall.

Behind the Amerigan regulars can be seen the remnants of the cavalry that had previously been decimated by enemy firing. It soon follows the volunteers in their flanking action.

FINAL ACT

The Amerigan position had looked desperate and was now faced with a closing near full strength Cerisian guard regiment. the remnants of the Rough Riders sought shelter in the buildings at East Pallin. However, the volunteers flanking measures were successful and the remnants of the Amerigan cavalry charged and captured the enemy cannon, only to be shot down by the remnants of a smaller guard unit. Nevertheless, three Cerisian units retreated, even as the Amerigan regualars were all but destroyed and the rough Riders decimated. In West Pallin a volunteer unit had used the cover of the hilly ground to provide cover in a duel with an enemy regiment. The latter was worn down and lost its regimental officer and the genera, causing it to retreat.. Sushimato was near death and no replacement commander was available. The Cerisians therefore continued with their original orders.

At the end of the battle the cerisian army was intatters except for one still strong guard regiment. The Amerigans were badly mawled but still had one regiment almost complete. The Cerisians were no longer in possession of West and East Pallin.

SETUP

Matt gained the dice roll to set up first and to go first. Most of his army arrived in the first move. although his artillery and machine gun were to come in the second move. His forces had plus D6 movement which they used in their aggressive advance. by contrast the Amerigans failed to roll the 5 or 6 required for most of their army and so had to fight a defensive action untill the rest of the army arrived. Most of the Amerigans were volunteers and their mettle was unknown unti they either fired or went into melee. Thankfully they were of regular status. One unit was already proven - The Rough Riders, who were considered elite but were armed with carbines. By contrast, the Cerisians had two infantry guard units that poured out some lethal fire. All Cerisian units were classed as elite for purposes of morale which made them tougher to crack but eventually three units retreated anyway, due to the number of casualties inflicted. The game was set to go for ten moves which passed between 11AM and 2.30 PM with a half our break in hostilities to have lunch. I really enjoyed using the Funny little Wars rules, especially the special rules for various armies.
