The State Of Affairs In Bogavania and Beerstein
A mystery illness has killed a swathes of Beersteiner leaders and heroes but the Bogavanians have not been untouched with the death of their best adventurer, the Hound. Also The king's daughter is still seriously ill.
Fortunately for Beerstein the Hillman mercenary leader, Harald Greentooth has made a full recovery, as has the king's brother who leads the force defending the Southern castle, formerly known as Castle Mathers.
Although the Beersteiners drove off a Fezian force from Thyroidia and captured its Vizier a second army is advancing in the South-East, this one from Gaddaff. Longshank is pushing his victorious but tired army South to meet it and he also hopes to use his captive vizier as a bargaining chip.
Meanwhile, in a blow to Bogavania, dragon ships have crossed the Emerald sea from the North, sailed up a river and Hillmen have landed on Bogavanian territory. These Hillmen are in the employ of neither Beerstein nor Bogavania. In fact they could have as easily attacked Beersteiner soil. The Hillmen have taken advantage of the war to carve out their own territory. Eleven units have arrived, so far without opposition. It is believed that they wish to control two hexes of land along the Bogavanian/ork border; (the border is made up of the river).
But wait, there is more! Bogavanians scouts, probing North-West have discovered a large Beersteiner force and have successfully withdrawn to pass on the information.
In the South a fair sized Bogavanian force has moved into a farming area to try to reclaim it and to cut off the Southern enemy castle from its supplies. However, a substantial and strong force, led by a crusader is already camped there to meet it. The Bogavanian force is weaker but has more missile foot troops whilst the Beersteiner have less missile foot troops in total but more of the deadly long bowmen. The Bogavanians have both the old handguns or hand cannons and the new matchlocks, invented by Leonardo di Caprio, but probably not in sufficient numbers to affect the battle. The Beersteiners have two units of mounted mercenary Mongol bowmen. They also have substantial numbers of plate armoured knights. The Bogavanians have chainmail foot troops, mounted plate knights and a unit of heavy cavalry in mail tunics.
Both sides have two medium catapults with Mat also having a heavy catapult. However, Mat's war machines will arrive from reserve so may not get much use.
Mat's army orders do not allow for withdrawal so it remains to see if he tries to fight defensively or offensively.
VARIABLE INVASION MECHANISM
The third party invasions resulted from rolls with the percentage dice. Also following the defeat of the Fezians a D6 was rolled and on a one a new force would come and it did! A fezian victory would have reulted in an eiven higher chance of this happening. I then rolled a dice to work out which city the force was based in and to determine when it would arrive. The Hillman roll indicated a 50% chance of invasion of Bogavania or Beerstein, again determined by dice roll. The dice gods favoured me this time.
Matt can ignore the Hillman invasion and hope the raiders are content to stay in two hexes. However, each move they are ignored further dice rolls will be made to see if they continue coming. If they are defeated in battle there is a small chance they will have reinforcements. If they win in battle there is a good chance of that happening and the invasion continuing to gain momentum. At the end of the campaign the land may well become a new outpost of the Hillmen and a new border set.
Because only Mat and I are playing we use dice rolls to determine actions of third parties and then whoever is not invaded takes on the battle from the invaders side.
