The Hill People Invade Bogavania.

Today occurred a battle between Bogavania and the Hillmen. It was  plate armour, muskets and pikes against lightly to medium armoured, sword and axe wielding barbarians supported by a mammoth!

Mat elected to be the more numerous Hillmen. For all practical purposes you can think of them as Vikings because most of the figures are Vikings, with some Celts and various fantasy barbarians. They are classes as wearing chainmail coats or vests which makes them a degree less protected tan chainmail covered knights and a couple of degrees below plate armoured. I give them high initiative and leadership which makes them formidable close combat warriors even when their armour is inferior. There was a unit of spear men who could have three ranks fighting in combat. The two handed axe and sword men that made up two regiments had to go last in combat except on the initial charge. The large weapons conferred two extra on the dice rolls.

The joy of fantasy armies is I can include all kinds of unusual things and the mammoth was one of these treats. I gave it 16 wounds and five attacks with two extra on the initial charge.

The Bogavanians had an interesting mix of armoured troops and lights with matchlock muskets.

The field was partially divided by a meandering river with a bridge. To cross it a unit had to stay by it a move to discover if it is fordable for 12 inches either direction from the middle of the unit. As it happened only a unit of pikemen forded the river.

Victory was based on enemy units killed and table quarters occupied.

The mammoth received wounds and lost its rider before charging the Fezian matchlock men. (The Fezians are allied to Bogavania).

Matchlock men supported by knights await the Hill man charge.
The Bogavanian artillerymen load their gun. The cannons could fire every second move but despite the slow rate of fire they killed a number of Bogavanian warriors.

Bogavanian mounted knights ride past Hill man archers but their short bows kill only one at the long range.
Bogavanian pike men deter the Hill Men from advancing across the bridge and the pike men are reluctant to advance due to the number of Hill men on the other side of the river. However the pike men on the left look for a ford to cross to the left and support the Bogavanian forces currently under pressure.
A close bloody battle occurs between Bogavanian knights  and Hill man spear men.
The mammoth is finally killed by the Fezians.

The Bogavanian mounted knights on their right flank gallop forward to try to stem the Hill man horde.

Meanwhile knights and Hillmen continue to destroy each other on the Bogavanian right flank.
Also on this flank two regiments of Bogavanian and Fezian matchlock men form up on the hill and pour fire onto the Hillmen.
On their left flank the mounted Bogavanian knights push the Hillmen into the pikes.
A cannon is overwhelmed by Hillmen on the Bogavanian left flank,
The matchlock men move forward to shoot the Hillman archers on the other side of the river.

Outcome: In the first stage of battle the Hillmen suffered from their enemy's fire power. Then the mammoth and Hillmen closed and began to swamp the Bogavanians but enough of the latter survived with fields of fire to decimate the Hillmen. The Hillman catapults did minimal damage. On conclusion of the battle the Hillmen had one unit of lights left and its two catapults and the Bogavanian knights had moved into the Hillman deployment zone.
