Retro Science Fiction Conversions
The combination of SF and ancient in retro Sf I find fascinating so, under influence of Trigan Empire and Ming the Merciless I completed these unusual figures.
First up is a conversion of Airfix cowboy. His vest was trimmed down and filled in to look like armour. He was given a pinned ancient Greek head from cheapo figure and with plume trimmed off. As with the next figures the gun was altered with putty. The cowboy style boots were also trimmed at the tops. and pistol holster removed.
Here is a cheapo ancient Greek with Warhammer 40k weapon. Putty ammo pouches and epaulettes were added. Sandals were made into boots.
The Airfix German has had his rifle end trimmed off and replaced with copper wire. I decided the wire was too thin and padded it out with putty but next time I'll use thicker wire, The respirator case was trimmed to smooth it down. The helmet sides were trimmed and putty cheek guards added.
Here is a Star Was 54mm figure unaltered except for garish colour scheme. This figure could also fairly easily be converted into one of Saddam Hussein's guard figures as some wore black uniforms and Star Wars style helmets.
My idea with the converted Germans is to use them not only as other world retro space figures but for imaginations. For this reason I have left the weapons featureless so they could be anything from matchlocks, flintlocks to repeater metal cartridge to ray guns! Nevertheless the cartridge pouches and straps do give them a late nineteenth to twentieth century look. My imagination might well be based on Ptolemaic Greeks who have discovered firearms and more modern technology!
The ancient Greeks continue this theme. When Greek or Roman style is seen in Flash Gordon or Trigan Empire comics and TV series little is different except there are ray guns as well as swords (to use when ammo runs out or just to look good).
