Bogavania Invades Ozzz

So Ozzz is seeing more trouble, This time it is a Bogavanian invasion. Unlike the Amerigan invasion the portal is this time bigger, allowing more troops to enter Ozzz at a time.

SET UP
Half the Bogavanian army arrives. The rest is divided into the main force and two cannons that are rolled for separately to arrive from reserve. The Ozzzralite forces initially present are the armies of the two bad witches. I decided that the treachery rolls would occur only on arrival of the Good forces and assumed that the two bad witches would be on good terms.

Another element added as an afterthought was that we would roll dice to see if it rained. So, yes, there was a good chance of heavy rain. Then, from move four we rolled a 12 sided die. On a 12 it rained and each move the chances increased until we would get to an 8 and then it would not rain. On this occasion we did not bother with wind etc. Wind would affect archery and there were no archers. But rain would be a big deal for muskets. Te Bogavanians had matchlocks and the Ozzzralites, flintlocks. Heavy rain would reduce the matchlock inflicted casualties to half. Light rain would do so by a quarter. So at move 8 the rain bucketed down and helped to salvage the Ozzzralites left flank!

THE PICS

Initial Bogavanian deploymet in the centre

Winkie Guard, skeleton warriors and light infantry
Bogavanian matchlock men with Sacred Mushroom flag

                                                     Winkie cannon with skeleton crew
                                                             Bogavanian reserves arrive

                                                          Bogavanian cavalry charge in
Skeleton warriors are moved over to the right to reinforce against the enemy cavalry.
(The gap in the board was diced for and declared to be a mountain so it can not be moved through or shot across. This did somewhat separate the initial two Ozzzralite armies.
One of the Bogavanian units has been shot to pieces by cannon, artillery and a harpy attack but it drives off the harpies (that 'deep striked' onto their heads) and continues its ride into the Valley of Death.
Bogavanian knights charge the dwarf mercenaries but the dwarfs win and drive them off.
After killing the giant the Bogavanian Winged lancers are in a life and death struggle with skeleton warriors. (The giant had slipped and fallen over when he tried to attack the lancers. They then attack him. He managed to stuff one of them into his tucker bag and threw another into the rest but in the end he succumbed).
Bogavanian matchlocks move through a piece of forest as a column of Bogavanian knights moves forward.
Winkie light infantry (in green) hold their own against the Bogavanians.

A level four sorceress is about to cause mayhem.
                                               Death of a giant
The Quadlings forces and the Munchkin forces had arrive, Quadlings on the right flank and Munchkins on the left. Glinda leads the Quadling grenadiers.
Munchkin sharpshooter balloon on the left

As the skeletons loose and their last crumble to dust the scarecrows move up. After launching a crow attack they engage the lancers in close combat but are pushed back.
The Wizard, Zoraster, with his guardsmen.

The sorceress caused huge destruction among the Munchkins and Winkies by using a Chain Lightning spell which affects four enemy regiments. She also used a spell which pushed back, off the field a whole newly arrived Munchkin cavalry regiment, Then the Munchkin snipers and the Wizard's grenadiers shot her down. The Wizard had used marksmanship spells to enhance their firing.

The end of the Winged lancers: The Winkie guard enter the fray and the cream of the Bogavanian forces are no more.
Glinda's guard, on the right, have cleared the enemy from the immediate field.
Quadling cavalry fire their carbines at the remnants of the Bogavanian foot knights just as the Quadling infantry fire their muskets and skeleton warriors move towards them.

The skeletons benefited in combat from their rank bonus, musician and standard. Even when they lost more warriors they still won the rounds of combat.
Glinda used her magic to move enemy troops around the field in order to place them in view of her grenadiers.

Winkie remnants now take the offensive on the left flank.
Foreground: Despite losing their artillery to the enemy fire and magic the Munchkin militia hold firm, strengthened by the presence of Dorothy Gale.

CONCLUSION

Bogavanian sorcerers played a big and destructive role in the battle but both died, the level four one from shooting and the level one one from a  miss-spell which made her head explode and a firey blast that enveloped half the men she was with.

On move seven it looked like the Bogavanians would win but this changed in a few more moves. The inferior firearms did not perform well in wet conditions and this also played a role.

Some of the smaller Ozzzralite units slowed down the enemy before being destroyed - these were a wolf pack led by a three headed Cerberus and the Harpies.

The game ended on move fourteen with a Ozzzralite victory

Next Monday Mat and I will play again the same scenario but this time I'll be the Bogavanian Commander.

Comments

  1. An interesting mash up of figures and periods - exotic units and great flags. Thanks for sharing this fascinating campaign. I liked the rain rule, realistic enough for bows and muskets

  2. Thanks Mark. I'm looking forward to a replay on Monday to see if I can beat Bogavania. So far it has won every battle although it came close to being defeated by the Amerigans when I commanded the latter. Technically, the battles were not part of a campaign but just replaying similar scenarios with the same armies.
The next challenge will be for me to create new invaders - a Dark Elf army in 54mm, something I am in the process of doing. There will be so many troop types with different abilities that I am going to revert to the Warhammer combat tables for melees.
