The Armies Of Nottinghill

It is quite a while since I read the Napoleon of Nottinghill but I found that the Internet and AI answered some questions I had and gave me forgotten information.

  UNIFORMS and EQUIPMENT

In general:
Halberds are mentioned as a common weapon. Swords, are also likely, and perhaps other medieval weapons like clubs and axes. At some point it is stated that some of Scott's men had bows and I am going to say they are longbows.

I don't think anything was said about firearms but I think it reasonable to say there were at least some available but would they be from medieval and Renaissance eras or Edwardian? I am going to have the best of both worlds and say matchlocks, flintlocks and metal cartridge rifles would have all been available but in limited numbers.

The sight of Renaissance looking troops with Martini-Henrys or Lee-Enfields will make a quaint addition. Another possibility would be Edwardian type uniforms in quartered borough colors, or there could be a sprinkling of men in Edwardian civilian attire armed with shotguns and rifles. Some purely Edwardian or Victorian uniforms of red, blue and green are also an option and even the odd bobby in blue uniform.

I intend to follow the main borough colors but with stripes and designs of other colors added.

Nottinghill:

Provost, Scott Wayne

The uniforms are red with gold trim. This matches Beef Eaters very well. The flag is a red lion on a yellow field. As an added presumption  shields and tunics with either the letters N or NH might be plausible.

Along with halberds and medieval handheld weapons they had a couple of catapults. As well as rocks they fired cabbages and other relatively harmless objects.

North Kensington:

Provost Buck. Purple uniforms and a flag of an eagle like the Russian eagle

South Kensington:.

The guard wore 'Splendid Blue'. Blue banner with 3 gold birds singing.

West Kensington:

Provost, James Barker.  Yellow

TROOP QUALITY

The 'soldiers' were really amateurs so I would not make their morale/leadership and skills especially high. However, I am going to assume that their gumption will be closely tied to the leadership of their commanders. However, the defenders of Nottinghill are probably more highly motivated through their 'patriotism' for their locale so I'll give them higher leadership/morale. The other boroughs seem to be motivated by mercantile interests so are perhaps, not as strong in their preparedness to place their lives on the line.

Also, the Nottinghill leader is close to fanatical and has been practicing with a wooden sword since childhood. I am going to give him higher leadership and weapon skill.

NUMBERS

Paul Wright's game had the Notting Hill defenders outnumbered two to one. I saw a reference, in the story, where they are outnumbered by six to one. Yet Wayne's army won most of the battles until overwhelmed later. The reasons were they mostly had home ground and they were probably more enthusiastic. They were quite good at ambush.

I have a game happening today and will be doing a post on it.
