The Battle of Chookum Farm (ACW)

ORGANISATION

Infantry 'regiments' 24 men
Cavalry 'regiments' 12 men
Gun crews 4 men

Mat and I decided to play another ACW game but with a twist. We each rolled 4 percentage die. The resultant score was what we had to spend on troops. Then we chose our own armies. Our scores were not wildly different but the choice of units was.

MY CONFEDERATES
*One General staff officer (attached to free general. (I attached him to a cavalry unit)                                   *Four 12 Pounder horse artillery
*Two elite Infantry
* Two elite cavalry
* One Cavalry
Total Men: 94

MAT'S FEDERALS
*Two Staff officers (one attached to a cavalry unit)
* Two Militia
* Two Regulars
*One Native American Infantry
*One 18 Pounder Field Artillery
*Two Regular Cavalry

Total Men: 139

All figures (except for a unit of Federal cavalry in original paintjobs) were painted by me and are a part of my ACW collection..

Towards the end of the battle, Mat's staff discuss retreat.

Mat's Union army at the beginning of battle.

I advanced some of my elite cavalry on Mat's right flank and it took out his Indian infantry.
 In the centre my two elite infantry regiments (yes not actual regimental numbers!) were in solid, partially protected positions, and along with my four cannons did a lot of damage. I took put mat's 18 pounder, early in the battle.

Mat made a cautious cavalry advance o my right flank. It eventually got there, was held up by one cavalry unit which was destroyed and then he took out my remaining cannon in a battery. (The rest had lost crews to musketry). Then his cavalry, subject to my infantry firing, was forced to retreat.

  By move eleven Mat's units were seriously down in numbers, failed leadership tests and retreated.
 My own damage was loss of three of my cannons' crews and a cavalry regiment.

  We decided that if any men survived in a unit the whole unit could return next game. In addition we rolled more percentage dice for additional troops. The next game will be bigger with Confederates a couple of units and more cannons ahead of the Federal forces. We rolled for some advantages for Mat's force and he gets a cavalry flank attack. it will arrive from reserve, at a random turn, and a predetermined point on a flank.
