The Stellar Republic Flag Carriers & Officers

The Stellar Republic is at 17th century technology level with matchlock muskets. The language differs from Beerstein, Bogavania and Fezia but the Beersteiners' language is closest. In our own universe, on Earth it is very similar to Dutch and so are many of the names.

Unlike the major powers, the Stellar Republic is close to what we call democratic, with its leaders elected by a majority of males, of sound mind, and who are over 21. Voting is compulsory except for those over 60. The position of president is held for two years and those eligible must be between 30 and 60. They must also pass a special exam to establish they have sufficient intelligence and the correct disposition. There is also a council of 12 who are chosen by a further election.

Those other nations who come into contact are often offended by the egalitarianism and call them 'Levellers'. and 'Communitarians'/ This is an exaggeration for although they have no king or sultan they still have differences of income and property. it is true that there was once a movement to share the women in common but this was eventually defeated. There is no record of what the women thought of this.

The infantry generally lacks armor and is divided into regular, elite and militia. The cavalry are equipped with breast plates and often with helmets. Some of the cavalry appear to have been descended from Alexander the Great's cavalry, looking much like ancient Greeks but having the benefit of stirrups. others have more to owe the 17th century Western European cavalry.

CONVERSIONS BELOW

Left cheapo pirate conversion as a superior officer, A Call to Arms officer given a flag for the elite infantry and right, a regular flag bearer made from a modern civilian. Sword scabbards are made from splitpins.

Left: Cheapo pirate as an officer, next is a militia flag bearer made from a modern civilian.

The uniform style is generally meant to be 17th century but the warm climate has dictated some departures including stockingless legs and rolled up shirt sleeves. Some officers still wear large wigs, mostly brown. The militia are most casual in attire. some of their number are descended from Aztecs fleeing human sacrifice. For the most part they do not wear the old feathered and animal costumes but there might be some exceptions.

Straw or light cotton slouch hats with red feathers are the common headgear. Equipment is light and usually just a canteen, haversack and sword.

The painting style I used is my hybrid one between model and old fashioned metal toy soldier (although these are ).

I'll be adding patches of flock to the card bases.

It could be, if Mat's Fezians defeats these islanders that will be virtually the last we see of them, although they could be drafted into the Fezian army. I'll be commanding them against the invaders so we will see.
