WW2 Aussies, WW1 British Tank Crew, WW1 British cavalry/gun outrider, Africa Corps, & Red Indian Painted
Here is a hollow-cast American Indian painted. I went for the bright colors of the original but with more detail. The base is a cut down poker chip and the finish is semi-gloss or is that semi-mat? The rocks were collected on a camping trip; I pick them individually based on shapes and colors.
I forget but I think this hard plastic figure is Beton. I added a cutdown match for a scabbard. It is a basic figure but would make a reasonable artillery horse rider. he will get a semi-gloss finish.
Here is the conversion of Lone Star Aussie bazooka man to Africa Corps. I like the black heart on the helmet but it is meant to be a shield to serve as the outline for the German Third Reich colors and the heart shape was accidental. However, I might file away the idea for something else. Africa Corps were issued 'reed green' uniforms that were sort of a light olive. They faded to various lighter sandy shades. Helmets were initially field grey but often painted sand color. The shiled on the anti-tank gun is made from a bread tie.
The figure looks ok from certain angles but the new head actually is a little weirdly positioned. On reflection, I would have kept the original head and modelled on a cap. The ammo pouches are modelled on after cutting off the old ones.
WW1 British tank crew. I'll be making more of these. The Aussie unaltered will double as WW1 tank crew. The holsters I should have painted brown leather; they were ope topped with a strip of leather buttoned across the pistol.
WW2 Aussies. These are the repro ones that came out in the 80s. I have given them strong suntans and the originals also had tanned skin. Brenguns were much used by Aussie troops.
Australian troops were NOT issued bazookas. Nor did they get the British Piat anti-tank gun. Instead they relied on their artillery to counter tanks. At Tobruk they hid in their trenches and let the German tanks roll over before engaging the following infantry. The tanks lacked infantry support and were then blown up by the artillery. The British had some bazookas but they were relatively short ranged and lacked the necessary cover in the desert. They preferred the PIATs.
Lone Star (originally called Harvey brand) Aussies, on some figures, have ammunition pouches of questionable accuracy as they are reduced in size and positioned strangely to almost resemble big pockets! On this occasion I did not try to improve them. One figure is not included here and that is the walking figure with slung rifle.
NEXT
I have some other various figures, I am working on, that I'll feature next post.
WARGAMES
I am delaying the next game until the end of the month as I have to clear my desert table of STUFF before I can play on it. That game will be the WW1 tank and troops against ancient Egyptians. I'll be playing a 'vanilla' game (well, with some chocolate sauce) without magic, sorcerer, undead, planes and GAS! But that will come later! am already planning yet another crazy mixed era matchup of American Wild West versus WW1 force probably German). I have been writing rules for it and it includes cowboys, Indians, gunfighters, US cavalry, Gatling, dynamite, hidden deployment, tank, wagons, stagecoach, lancers and other goodies.
