ACOTS Easter 2023 Wargames
Whilst Bob organized the swap meet at his house on the Friday Steve organized the medieval wargames on Saturday and Sunday. Bob and Steve both umpired on the Saturday and Bob did the umpiring on Sunday.
The figures were from Steve's collection of superbly painted 54 and 60mm figures.
The rules were modified Memoir 44 rules.
It took a lot of getting used to resolving every unit's individual actions before moving on to the next. if one forgot, even for a moment and began to move on to the next one lost that unit's conclusive action such as shooting or melee.
Units were generally twelve infantry and something less for cavalry. Each group base had an inbuilt dice holder. Fifures were not actually removed but the dice was turned down as casualties mounted More elite units began with the number six and less elite ones a three. Casualties were removed until a unit was destroyed. Special Memoir 44 dice were employed to determine casualties. A tank image, for example meant a mounted knight was killed. A hand grenade killed anyone. A rifleman image killed infantry. Stars killed no one. there was also a flag which meant a retreat and another which meant two retreats. Three dice were rolled for each time a unit fired or had a turn of melee.
Each turn four units could perform actions such as moving, shooting or fighting a melee. In addition to this cards were drawn for each army each turn. Red meant an extra unit could move. There were also wild cards that allowed extra turns, acts of God and a barrage of arrows.
Each turn took about 15 minutes.
We played three games each with players changing opponents and the scores were added up to determine the champion. For the record, I had one minor loss, one major victory and one major defeat.
On Sunday we had one large game which went for three hours. We had three plyers on each side, Steve was commander of my side with Steve, Larry and myself. The other side consisted of Nigel, Lucianna and Palmersaurus as commander. There was also a brief paying on that side by Antonnio who succeeded in briefly attacking some of his own side. This was greeted with some hilarity by our side and some painful groans and muttering by the opposition.
I was stationed don the right flank and faced off against Lucianna. It was a close run thing with her more numerous units against my tougher but less numerous ones. Nigel, as acting commander fed troops and extra moves to Lucianna to put pressure on my army. later the tables were turned as Steve sent his numerous cavalry away from the center to add his support. Then, at the end he about faced and returned to menace the enemy in the center. on the left wing Larry was much reduced in numbers but held on. At the end i had three units left but Lucianna was wiped out.
One thing though, Steve had given the other side ten extra units.
