Fedayeen Saddam Hussein Toy Soldiers?

One of the things I like about collecting cheapo 'army men' (and others) is seeing the intended or unintended variations.

On taking a second look at these prone figures I noticed that the helmets looked remarkably like Star Wars helmets, or Saddam Hussein's guard (Fedayeen). These soldiers wore black uniforms (white on parade) including heavy fibreglass Darth Vader type helmets. References I found show the usual light khaki equipment.

I doubt very much that the figures are meant to represent the dictator's guard unit. More likely, it is a moulding defect with the usually depicted Fritz helmet. The figures are probably tending towards 1/35 rather than 1/32.

Below: Two black undercoated figures and two unpainted with damaged rifles.

I label these kinds of figures 'crude-quaint'. In this case the badly moulded helmets are advantageous for depicting an unusual unit. Strictly speaking, the guard were normally armed with AK 47s. If I was really keen I could chase some up from a Tamiya or other kit.

The other thing to do with such figures is to paint them as Star Wars rebels or in garish purples, reds, blues and bright greens as retro SF figures..
